BABOK Revisiting with AI

BABOK Revisiting with AI seems inevitable these years, especially when there is no news of the fourth edition of this body of knowledge. The rapid advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI) have reshaped the way we think about and execute Business Analysis. As a practitioner and advocate for continuous improvement, I believe it’s time we rethink the Business Analysis Body of Knowledge (BABOK).
💡 Why?
AI has introduced a new paradigm in tools, techniques, and guidelines (TTG). Processes that were once manual or dependent on traditional approaches can now be enhanced, automated, or even replaced by intelligent systems. Technologies like Machine Learning (ML), Robotic Process Automation (RPA), Deep Learning (DL), and Natural Language Processing (NLP) are not just futuristic concepts—they’re the tools we use today.
📊 Input > TTG > Output
The future BABOK can benefit from an AI-driven perspective for each process, highlighting:
- Inputs: Data-driven requirements and modern needs.
- Tools: Advanced AI-based platforms (e.g., chatbots, RPA software).
- Techniques: Leveraging machine learning models, predictive analytics, and NLP.
- Guidelines: Best practices for integrating AI ethically and effectively.
- Outputs: Smarter, faster, and more accurate business solutions.

🔄 Visualization Example
Take the example of the “Plan Business Analysis Approach.” The traditional process of TTG can now be augmented with AI to produce an updated approach to how we analyze needs and derive strategies. A diagram like the one shared below can visualize these changes clearly.
💭 Your Thoughts?
As AI continues to evolve, how can we, as a community, ensure that the BABOK remains relevant and serves as a beacon for best practices? Let’s discuss and collaborate to create a forward-thinking, AI-driven framework for business analysis.
