Solution vs. Design in BA: What’s the Difference?

In the world of business analysis, two words are often used side by side: solution and design. While they are closely related, they do not mean the same thing. According to the BABOK® Guide (Business Analysis Body of Knowledge), understanding the difference between the two is essential for analysts, stakeholders, and development teams.
What is a Solution?
A solution is defined in BABOK as a specific way of satisfying one or more business needs in a context. In simple terms, a solution is the answer to a business problem. It represents the vision or idea of how an organization can meet a need, improve a process, or deliver value. Solutions are more about the business side: identifying what outcome is required and what problem must be solved.
Think of a solution as the “what”:
- What need are we addressing?
- What outcome are we trying to achieve?
- What is the business value?
What is a Design?
A design, on the other hand, is described in BABOK as a usable representation of a solution. In other words, design is the blueprint that shows how the solution will be structured and implemented. It is more technical and detailed, breaking down the high-level idea into components that developers, architects, or teams can actually build and deliver.
Design is the “how”:
- How will the solution work in practice?
- How will systems, processes, or products be structured?
- How will this be delivered to end users?
Solution vs. Design: The Connection
The solution always comes first. It is envisioned at a business level, then gradually expanded and opened up until it becomes a design. The design translates the concept into a practical, technical, and deliverable plan. Without a solution, design has no purpose. Without design, a solution cannot be realized.
By clearly distinguishing between solution and design, business analysts can improve communication, reduce confusion, and ensure that projects move smoothly from concept to execution.
If you want to visualize it, imagine a playful transformation: on one side you see the idea (solution), and on the other side, the structured plan (design) ready to deliver.
